What is a Haku lei?

  • A Haku lei is a head (crown) lei usually reserved for those special occasions such as luaus (parties), graduations, weddings, and ceremonies. The word “Haku” refers to a technique of lei-making where the flowers and/or greenery is sewn/braided with the “face-out.”

When are Haku leis worn or given as a gift?

  • Per, a Haku lei, or lei po’o, is a lei made for the head (Haku literally means “to braid”). The tradition of making and giving lei stems from ancient Hawai’i, when leis were used for ceremonial purposes, as adornment, and to signify rank. Later, with the growth of the tourist industry, they were used as a gift for those arriving or leaving. Hawaiian Haku leis are considered special and worn and are worn or given as a gift for weddings, birthdays, and graduations.

How long do Haku leis last?

  • Haku lei are generally made of orchids which are known to be hardy flowers. Orchids flowers and blooms gather moisture and nutrients from the air, so where it is stored is important to extending the life of the lei.
