What do Hawaiian leis mean?

More loosely defined, a lei is any series of objects strung together with the intent to be worn. The most popular concept of a lei in Hawaiian culture is a wreath of flowers presented upon arriving or leaving as a symbol of affection.

What is the symbolism of a lei?

Traditionally, Hawaiian leis are a symbol of ALOHA. When someone is given a lei, it is a symbol of honor, love and friendship as well as a greeting. Sharing Aloha is a Hawaiian tradition known around the world. Give a gift of Aloha with unique Orchid Leis, Graduation Leis, Luau Leis, Mother's Day LeisWedding Leis. or any special occasion, Learn more at about the history of the Hawaiian flower lei.

How long does a Hawaiian Lei Last?

Typically, orchid leis last about 5-7 days with proper care.  Orchids are generally sturdy and because they gather moisture and nutrients from the air, this helps the Hawaiian lei last up to 7 days after it is made. Checkout out our Lei care guide and video.

How do you dispose of a lei?

As a tradition, throwing a lei in the trash is a sign of disrespect and should be avoided. The best way to dispose of a lei is the traditional way, returning the lei back to the land/earth. The best way to do this is to remove the flowers from the string of your Hawaiian Lei and scatter them in the ocean/body of water, bury the lei in the earth or burn it to return back into the air.

What is the meaning of Hawaiian Lei?

Everything has a purpose and meaning in the Hawaiian culture,  a Haku lei means “weaver of lei,” or “lei maker.” Therefore Haku is really a style of "Haku" braiding of a lei made of fresh flowers and leaves that is made in the haku braiding style. The Haku lie is a lei woron on the head as a crown. It is a special lei given at celebrations to beautify, show honor and respect. Haku leis are given and received as Graduation Leis, Mother's Day Leis, and Wedding Leis.
